Retr0Brite

I just aquired a major haul of Commodore and Atari goodies from a local person who is moving and needed to unload all their collection. For $120 I got 2 C64's 2 Vic-20's 1 C128D 8 disk drives (3-1571's, 3-1541's and 2 1541-II's) plus an Atari 1200xl and a Atari 521-ST. The issue with all these items is that they are yellowed some worse than others. Have any of you used the Retr0brite formula to clean vintage computer cases? From everything I have read online it is pretty foolproof and shouldn't cause any issues but I am kinda afraid to try it on anything valuable until I have some feedback. I am also worried that it will remove the key symbols and since the keyboard for the 128D is the most yellowed item in the lot that is what I want to treat the most. According to the internet that is not usually an issue but I would rather be safe than very sorry as it seems that these keyboards are expensive to replace. Once I have treated this stuff I will post before and after pics and try to document my experiences.

Hi Jeff,

Hi Jeff,
I hang out in the CBM-Hackers mail group which is open to the public, (you might want to join with a haul like you just aquired) and I have heard them say that the retrobite works.  You might also google for cbm-hackers and yellowing or cbm-hackers and retrobrite to see past discussions, these guys are avid restorers,
All the luck!
Bil

Thanks

Thanks for the advice! I will sign up for CBM-hackers asap. Only issue now is that if I keep getting all this stuff I will have to take over one of my roommates rooms for storage. Make him sleep on the couch or something. Probably time to sell some of the stuff that I do not need/want. I'll get some before and after pictures and share the results good or bad!

Heh, you have run into the "Law of Commodore Conservation" -- whatever free space there is, Commodore will fill it! ;-)

I Retr0brighted by A500 a while back:

Before and after it's 24th Birthday treat:

The lighting was a bit different for the 2nd two pics, but there is a comparison with the door from underneath, that's still the original colour.

This year I sprayed it with a clear coat of Satin finish spray which will stop it going yellow ever again.

Looks great

That looks awesome! that turned out looking like new. I have an A500 myself that needs some love too. Oddly enough only a handful of keys and a spot on the case is yellowed. Maybe some concentrations of bromine in those locations in the plastic causing it to yellow more? Nasty goopy stuff but works wonders doesn't it?

Wow,, nice!
