Check out the 8 bit repair

Check out the 8 bit repair video where Rob Clarke talks about a modern day SID chip replacement using non SOC components.  Otherwise there would be little need to generate in hardware IMHO when you can get .vst modules that simulate any type of Moog or drum set, amplifier or pedal effect in software.  But man was the SID chip cool back then.... I had been building synthesizer modules from a company called PAIA and had dropped out of high school to build my own synthesizer using a variety of circuits and techniques (without Keith Emerson there would be no C128), and the SID had it all in one spot.  VCF's in general and VCO linearity were two of the toughest things when building yourself and everything was very monotonic at the time.  Lol... my synth I designed had a "chorus" feature where you could kick on 2 more oscillators, and then use a ring modulator to combine them, though it had a limited range for tracking linearity.
